Discussion on Flash, pixels and techniques

OoPixel.com is a two member flash game site with an emphasis on OOP and clean pixel graphics. One of us breathes object oriented programming and the other is on a steady diet of some million pixels per day.

Welcome to see what is the beginning of what we would do if we had all the money in the world, in other words from our hearts.

New game: Gride

Now that Jayisgames has published Jayisgames Casual Game Contest entries, we are able to publish our game here too. So, enjoy!

Play Gride!

If you would like to host our game on your site you can one of these packages. We truly appreciate if you do!

1. Full package , includes all the files required. gride-directory need to be in the saem directory where you place gride.swf

2. Standalone package , includes only gride.swf. All external files will be downloaded from oopixel.com. This will likely work slower but it will work if your system only allows a single swf or if you do not want to consume that much of your precious bandwidth.

Edit: When using standalone package, remember to specify allowScriptAccess=”always” in embedded object tag. This let’s it contact oopixel.com and download sounds and images.

Play Gride!

Unofficial Mochiads haXe code repository

I might call it as unofficial code repository as it contains already almost all Mochiads code ported to haXe. Newest contribution is Mochibot code. It’s only a couple of dozens of lines but there it is.

Mochiads with Haxe - domain filtering bug

I was trying to set Mochiads running using code from http://snippetsnap.com/snippets/4337-New-Snippet. Everything worked like a charm until I tried to set up domain filtering. Ads were always displayed – no matter the filtered domains.

Thanks to matthew at mochiads forum I was able to fix the code.

Mochiads leaderboards with Haxe

If you haven’t noticed, Mochiads has just released a new leaderboards system. Yeah, many leaderboard systems exist, but this particular one is pretty easy to use and it looks damn good. See Emanuele Feronato’s post about it (includes some screenshots to get the idea).

As I am coding my AS3 projects with Haxe, I made a port of Leaderboards API to Haxe. Mochiads does not offer this code at least yet. So here you go.

haXe: More porting

I still haven’t got enough time for WLEngine development as I am working with my master’s thesis. I am planning to get it ready in November. After that, WLEngine development will finally go on again!

However, I have been thinking what to do with WLEngine performance issues. Oh yeah, it is working pretty smoothly in its tiny view but I would love to have it larger, and still playing smoothly.

Currently, WLEngine code is written to be compiled with MTASC (almost AS2 code). But MTASC will likely never support AS3 and there is already AS3 support in Flash Player 9. Also, Flash 9 promises a great preformance boost (some say AS3 works tens or even a hundred times faster than AS2, but of course it depends on the compiled software too).

Now, I have read about haXe compiler. It has AS3 support and it is a cross operating system compiler. Some tests at gamehaxe show us that haXe compiled AS3 is still much slower than pure AS3. But now there is more good news. HaXe can compile haXe code not only to Flash but also to standard AS3 code, which then can be compiled with AS3 compiler that comes with free Flex package. Of course I could use this compiler without haXe, but I see a great potential in haXe. HaXe also provides some additional functionality and libraries to work with.

Next thing to do is to translate AS2 code to haXe code which should be a pretty easy task. Let’s see if we can make that tiny WLEngine window larger after all :)
